AI technologies are being integrated into our society. Even though these systems can be beneficial, it is important to consider and be aware of the negative impacts they can have on people and society. The purpose of this study is to highlight the direct impacts that socially unsustainable AI systems have caused, and the systemic impacts that they could potentially lead to. The study was conducted following an adaptation of a systematic mapping study, and by distributing a survey. The results of the study present twenty eight AI systems and their impacts. The study also highlight some potential factors that lead AI systems to operate in a socially unsustainable manner. This is done to provide an explanation to why these impacts occur, and to attract attention to these well-known factors. The findings of this study should alert researchers and developers to tackle the issues of unsustainable AI, and encourage more wholesome guidelines that counter the occurrence of the presented impacts.
